Harlem Brownstone, New York
The townhouse project was an interior renovation and design for a classic Italianate brownstone in New York City. The homeowner expressed the desire for a unique and bold design that reflects their personalities, while blending contemporary with the historic backdrop of the architecture . We wanted to create an instant drama on entering the townhouse, with metallic chandelier, whimsical furnishings and colorful decor. The drama played out in full force in the jewel-box-like powder room where we made innovative use of materials and finishes, such as the use of fluted terrazzo tiles as wall base tiles, and grooved arabescato marble tiles as the mirror’s frame, to create a original aesthetic while complimenting the historic townhouse. The brass and glass tube pendants in the formal living room celebrated the ceiling height, and evoking an uplifting yet moody ambience. The use of textural wallpaper in the formal living room space was to pay homage to the hand-applied plaster wall technique from the past.
